Late 1800s Victorian Bois Durci Log Bracelet, Restrung Elastic, $285
This is made from my favorite Victorian faux-jet material. Bois durci is French for “hardened wood,” which is a pretty accurate description, except that it ignores its most intriguing aspect— It’s essentially sawdust hardened with animal blood. For a material that was usually used for mourning jewelry, the blood ingredient is especially compelling, although I doubt Victorians would have seen it that way.
I’m pleased whenever I find anything made of bois durci, but the log motif in this bracelet is particularly interesting, since It references the material itself. Pretty Postmodern for the Victorian era.
